Zimmerman named Vebleo Fellow

In recognition of his prominence and leadership in his field over the course of his career, Professor of the Practice Michael Zimmerman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was named a Vebleo Fellow. Vebleo committee members and executive board members nominate fellows based on their research and influence in their respective fields, and nominees are required to present at a Vebleo conference. Zimmerman gave a presentation, titled “Fundamental safety/material issues holding back safe Li Ion and Li Metal batteries” at the Vebleo Materials Science Engineering and Technology webinar in August 2022.

Zimmerman received his bachelors from Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, his master’s from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his PhD from University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts in 1997 and his research focuses on novel polymer electrolytes for batteries, liquid crystal polymers, composite materials, and materials science.  He is the co-principal investigator for the Research and Characterization of Composites and Polymers (RECCAP) Lab, which focuses on solving practical industrial problems through materials-enabled innovation.

In addition to his work at Tufts, Zimmerman is the founder and chief scientist of Ionic Materials in Woburn, MA. The company develops efficient, high-performance batteries, and high-frequency electronic substrates. He recently founded a new company, Z-Polymers, which is working on next generation fuel cells for energy storage.
